The skate-park sub group meets monthly at Club Sax, the Resource Centre, Seaman Avenue, Saxmundham. The group includes young skaters and BMXr’s, Youth Workers, Police, Councillors, Youth Council members and local residents.
The group have been meeting regularly to move things forward and have a core group of 8 young people, though other young people attend the meetings on an ad hoc basis. We have consulted three skate park design and build companies – Maverick, Bencrete and Gravity, who have each met with the sub group and discussed design options.
The companies have been given a design brief and wish list so that they can incorporate what the group wants in the final proposal design. The group have stipulated that the park should suit skate boarders, BMX, scooters, and bladers alike.
Once the design is agreed and approved by the committee through consultation with the local young people, detailed specifications and costings will be required so that funding can be sought.
So far the group have fund raised in a number of different ways holding stalls at different events, completing a sponsored abseil down Stradbroke Church and this summer the whole group are organising a sponsored bike ride around Saxmundham and the Villages SAVVY aims to serve.
The group has already secured over £11k funding for the Teen Shelter on the Seaman Avenue Play Park from the Youth Opportunity Capital Fund, and held two successful Skate Jams working with Soundwaves at Leiston Skate Park. At the Skate Jam in August last year there were competitions for skaters, BMX’s and Scooters along with live bands and a DJ. This will be replicated this year and SAVVY will again have the chance to promote what they are doing and raise funds with a BBQ.
